Redwood City Emerald Hills Homes For Sale
Emerald Lake Hills (also known as Emerald Hills) is a community of about 4,000 residents, mostly comprised of unincorporated land north of Jefferson and west of Alameda. The 22nd wealthiest community in California and easily one of the most desirable in the peninsula, it boasts a sophisticated, eclectic feel, a laid-back way of life, and excellent schools. Here you’ll find scenic, hill-side properties and tree-lined, family-friendly neighborhoods, just minutes from the heart of Redwood City.
First conceived as a resort community during the First World War where San Franciscans could escape hectic city life, the neighborhood of course takes its name from the sparkling, green-blue lakes that are its trademark. The area was originally divided into two distinct neighborhoods, Emerald Lake and Emerald Hills, and still is to some extent. Founded in 1920, Emerald Lake Country Club still owns Lower Emerald Lake, and club members enjoy swimming, fishing, and sunbathing; Upper Emerald Lake is privately-held by lakeside property owners.
By the end of World War II, the area had begun to transition from a resort into a residential community. Today, housing stock varies considerably, from original, small cottages to modern mansions, giving Emerald Hills its eclectic feel. Prices here can be steep, with even older, unimproved properties selling at top-dollar mostly due to land value. The median home price is $1.75 million.
One of the jewels of the Emerald Hills neighborhood is Edgewood Park and Nature Preserve, a 467-acre protected grassland area known for its spectacular wildflowers and year-round hiking opportunities. Another well-known spot in Emerald Hills is Handley Rock, a 50-foot sandstone monolith that is a popular climbing spot and offers spectacular views of the Bay Area.
Emerald Hills is a neighborhood whose peaceful, laid-back feel is perfectly balanced by sophistication and upscale living.
